Lines and wrinkles, excessive sweating, migraines … is there anything BOTOX Cosmetic can’t treat? It seems that way! Many of our BOTOX patients in Dallas, TX, are familiar with another of its many uses—reducing the appearance of a gummy smile.

Can BOTOX fix a gummy smile? Yes!

“Gummy smile” is just what it sounds like: Showing a lot of your gums when you smile. In the medical world, we call this “excessive gingival display”; our patients who deal with it often just call it annoying.

Although it’s not a dangerous condition, a gummy smile can make you feel extremely self-conscious, potentially even affecting your social interactions. It can be exhausting and frustrating to hold back a smile when you’re truly happy on the inside, and it can send the message that you’re unfriendly or cold. While surgical options can help, many people simply aren’t ready for invasive treatment. BOTOX is a great option that allows you to enjoy your smile without any necessary downtime. We talk more about this in our related blog post.

How does BOTOX get rid of a gummy smile?

This powerful injectable slows down muscle movement wherever it’s placed. Unlike injectable fillers, which physically add volume where they’re administered, BOTOX prevents targeted muscles from moving. This makes it quite versatile for both aesthetic and medical indications.

Where do they inject BOTOX for a gummy smile?

When used to treat a gummy smile, we inject a very small amount of the product into the area between the nose and the mouth. This prevents the upper lip from excessively retracting when you grin, leaving more lip coverage and therefore keeping your gums well hidden.

How long does a BOTOX treatment session last?

As with other BOTOX treatments, undergoing BOTOX to treat a gummy smile is a relatively simple and quick procedure. After preparing your skin, I or my colleague make a few injections using a fine needle. After the injections are complete, you’re free to return to work, home, or any of your other daily activities—no downtime needed.

How long does BOTOX last for a gummy smile?

The results of your treatment typically develop within a few days, allowing you to smile naturally without worrying about your visible gums. The results of BOTOX for a gummy smile endure for several months.

What else can BOTOX treat?

BOTOX is FDA-approved for a variety of indications, and it’s been trusted in the medical community since the 1980s. By the time it was approved for aesthetic use in 2002, BOTOX had already been widely used to treat conditions such as sagging or twitching eyelids and certain types of spasms. Today, it’s showing promise for treating far more conditions, including depression.
