Getting Rid of a Double Chin

A double chin may appear gradually, persist despite a healthy lifestyle, or become most noticeable in photos and profile views. For many people, it’s not about weight; it’s about anatomy, genetics, and how the body naturally stores fat beneath the chin.

At Dallas Center for Dermatology and Aesthetics, we frequently consult with patients seeking a refined, nonsurgical way to enhance their appearance. KYBELLA® is one of many options that offer a clinically proven option specifically designed for this concern.

What Causes a Double Chin?

Submental fullness—the technical term for a double chin—can develop for several reasons. Genetics play a significant role, as does aging, which can alter fat distribution in the lower face and neck. Weight fluctuations may contribute, but even patients at a stable, healthy weight can have persistent fullness under the chin. Consistently poor posture can also contribute.

Because this type of fat is often resistant to diet and exercise, it frequently requires a targeted medical approach.

How To Get Rid of a Double Chin

Many treatments can minimize the appearance of a double chin, including several nonsurgical options.

KYBELLA

KYBELLA is an FDA-approved injectable treatment to reduce moderate to severe fat beneath the chin. It contains deoxycholic acid, a substance your body naturally uses to break down and absorb dietary fat.

When precisely injected into submental fat, KYBELLA destroys fat cells in the treated area. Once these cells are destroyed, the body gradually processes and removes them—meaning they do not regenerate.

How KYBELLA Improves the Chin and Jawline

Rather than adding volume or tightening skin, KYBELLA focuses on fat reduction. As fullness beneath the chin decreases, the jawline often appears more defined and the neck contour smoother. Results develop gradually, allowing changes to appear natural and balanced with your facial structure.

A 2018 article published in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery explains how deoxycholic acid reduces submental fat.

CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, nonsurgical treatment that “freezes” fat under the chin. The treatment is best known for reducing fat on the abdomen and love handles, but it works the same way for a double chin. A specially designed applicator called the CoolMini™ fits snuggly under the chin and delivers controlled cooling that destroys fat cells without harming surrounding tissue.

Radiofrequency Energy

If your double chin is primarily due to loose skin, or if you want your neck skin tightened after KYBELLA treatments, we may recommend Thermage®. Using a radiofrequency energy device, Thermage heats the collagen fibers in the deeper layers of the skin. This results in two things happening: First, your existing collagen contracts, producing a tightening effect. Second, the heat energy also triggers the production of new collagen along the jawline and upper neck line, resulting in smoother, more radiant skin. Learn more about RF treatment in our related blog post.

The results of Thermage (i.e., measurably tighter skin) emerge gradually over a 4- to 6-month period.

Topical Treatment

For milder cases of a double chin, Nectifirm® from Revision Skincare can help firm the neck and décolletage. Its mix of plant extracts, antioxidants, and proprietary biotechnological blends works to smooth out rough, crepey skin, giving the skin a gentle lift.

Available on our online store, Nectifirm is one of our bestsellers.

Surgical Intervention

In more severe cases of laxity, the best approach is plastic surgery. In your consultation, we’ll tell you if your case falls under this category. If it does, we’ll most likely recommend that you research neck liposuction or neck lift surgery.
