About Laser Hair Removal

The LightSheer hair removal system is one of the most effective lasers for achieving permanent hair reduction for our patients from Plano, Fort Worth, and other cities near Dallas. Laser hair removal is performed to reduce hair growth for extended periods of time, which may be months to years depending on the area treated. The ideal candidate is a fair complected, dark haired individual; however, this laser, unlike others, can safely be used to treat darker skin types as well. Patients with darker skin types may require a test area before proceeding with full treatment.

The laser works by generating intense light which targets melanin (pigment) within the hair itself. The hair acts as a conductor – carrying the laser energy to the hair follicle. This energy damages or destroys the hair follicle, thus, impeding hair growth.

Each hair grows in an independent growth cycle. There are 3 different phases within each cycle. The active or growing phase is called anagen. There is also a transition phase (catagen) and a resting phase (telogen). Because only the hairs in the anagen phase respond to the laser hair removal, several treatments are necessary to achieve a satisfactory result. After multiple sessions, approximately 80% of individuals will have long-term hair reduction.

Your Treatment

The LightSheer hair removal procedure is non-invasive and is performed quickly and easily in the office. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, the laser session may be a few minutes to an hour or more. The actual treatment is easily tolerated, causing only a slight tingling sensation. Because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, topical anesthesia may be used to make the treatment comfortable.

Most individuals are able to return to normal activity without disruption, as the treatment causes only a minimal amount of redness and swelling. Both of which disappear within a short time frame.

Our practice offers additional laser procedures for other cosmetic concerns as well. Treatments such as Fraxel® can help tighten the skin, smooth wrinkles, and fade sun spots. We encourage you to browse our photo gallery to see real results from our dermatologists.
