What Is CoolSculpting?
The CoolSculpting procedure uses an innovative process called cryolipolysis™ to freeze fat cells. At our Dallas, Texas, practice, patients relax while a CoolSculpting applicator targets the treatment area with temperatures cold enough to destroy fat cells without injuring nearby tissue. Targeted fat is then metabolized and flushed away as part of the body’s normal processes. A clinical study showed that a single treatment “resulted in a normalized fat layer reduction of 20.4% at 2 months and 25.5% at 6 months after treatment.”1
Who Is a Candidate for CoolSculpting?
We recommend CoolSculpting for people who are generally active and fit, but who are looking to reduce fat around the waistline or thighs. Common problem areas treated with CoolSculpting include “love handles,” a “muffin top,” “bra fat,” and inner and outer thighs. With the addition of the CoolSmooth™ applicator, patients with even small fat deposits can benefit.
How Long Do CoolSculpting Results Last?
The results from CoolSculpting are long lasting because treated fat cells are flushed out of the body. However, CoolSculpting does not prevent weight gain. Healthy eating and regular exercise are needed to maintain your results. And additional treatments may provide further benefits. Nonsurgical EMSCULPT® treatments can firm muscle and reduce fat on the buttocks and abdominal area. Thermage® skin tightening treatments can further enhance your results without surgery.
Which Is Better: EMSCULPT or CoolSculpting?
While both EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting are noninvasive body contouring treatments, the best option for you depends on your cosmetic goals and unique anatomy. During your consultation, your practitioner will review the differences to determine if either EMSCULPT or CoolSculpting is better suited to you. We often have patients who benefit from both treatments.
EMSCULPT vs. CoolSculpting
|Treatment||Benefits||Treatment Areas||Treatment Time||Recovery Time||See Results||Number of treatments|
Muscle toning and building
|30 minutes||None||3 months||4 treatments over 2 weeks|
|CoolSculpting||Fat reduction||Double chin
|30 minutes to 1 hour||None||2 to 3 months||1 to 2 treatments|
How Long Does a CoolSculpting Treatment Take?
CoolSculpting is a simple office procedure that normally takes about 1 hour per treatment area.
What Happens During a CoolSculpting Treatment?
CoolSculpting requires no anesthesia. For the first 10 minutes of treatment, you may feel a strong feeling of coldness as cryolipolysis takes place. Most people are unaffected by this and become used to the sensation as the procedure progresses. Some people read, watch television, or simply relax during CoolSculpting.
Treating “Non-Pinchable” Areas
Even small fat deposits that can’t be pinched, such as on the thighs, can be treated comfortably and conveniently with the CoolSmooth applicator. The applicator is an innovative option for our patients. During a traditional CoolSculpting procedure, suction pulls a bulging area of fatty tissue into an applicator. This mechanism is highly effective for even, consistent fat reduction on areas such as the abdomen, love handles, and lower back, where a person could “pinch” a fatty bulge. However, it wasn’t effective on smaller, “non-pinchable” treatment areas, such as the thighs.
The CoolSmooth applicator is flat and does not require suction, making it suitable for much smaller or more spread-out fat deposits that can’t be pinched. The CoolSmooth applicator is so effective at treating the thigh area, in fact, that CoolSculpting was cleared by the FDA for thigh treatment after its inception (it was previously cleared for the abdomen and flanks).
Like other CoolSculpting procedures, treatment with the CoolSmooth applicator is comfortable and effective. While experiences vary, patients generally require 1 to 2 treatments lasting 2 hours per area, and final results develop over the course of about 1 to 2 treatments.
For comprehensive results in these areas, people popularly choose to reduce cellulite with noninvasive EMTONE™ treatments.
Reducing a Double Chin
One of the areas that causes both men and women concern is below the chin where fat accumulates. Some people are genetically predisposed to developing a double chin, and it can also be an early sign of aging. The introduction of CoolSculpting’s CoolMini™ applicator offers our Dallas patients a completely non-invasive way to eliminate excess fat below the chin and small bulges in other areas, such as the knees and the underarm area. No incisions, no injections.
Like other CoolSculpting applicators, the CoolMini effectively reduces fat in the treatment area, meaning you’ll enjoy a more prominent chin and sleeker neckline without the downtime that neck liposuction can involve. The CoolMini applicator is designed specifically to fit snugly in smaller areas. It uses suction to pull the fat into the cup-shaped applicator, where cold plates chill the fat.
After 1 or 2 CoolMini treatments, most patients begin noticing a reduction in the appearance of their double chins; however, patient experiences vary.
DualSculpting™: Cut Treatment Time in Half
We now offer DualSculpting with 2 CoolSculpting devices, enabling us to treat 2 areas at the same time. The DualSculpting process uses the same technology as CoolSculpting, but treats 2 areas at once. For instance, we can treat both love handles at the same time, cutting the treatment time from 2 hours to 1 hour.
How Can I Optimize and Speed Up My CoolSculpting Results?
We optimize your results by immediately following the CoolSculpting procedure with Zimmer ZWave, an innovative treatment that uses radial pulse technology to stimulate collagen production. Instead of the manual massage that most practices perform after CoolSculpting treatments, the ZWave breaks down the fibrous connective tissue associated with cellulite and helps smooth and tighten the skin. The non-invasive procedure helps accelerate the results of your CoolSculpting treatment without discomfort.
I highly recommend CoolSculpting. It was painless with no downtime and minimal bruising and redness. About 4 weeks later, I saw great results. Within 6 weeks, I was thrilled!”

What Can I Expect After a CoolSculpting Treatment?
Numbness, soreness, or tingling around the CoolSculpting treatment area is normal and usually lasts for a few weeks. Light swelling, bruising, or redness can also occur and should subside within a couple of days. While experiences vary, most of our patients return to work and normal activities immediately.
How Long After CoolSculpting Will I See Results?
Results appear gradually over the course of several months as the body flushes away the treated fat cells. Most people begin to notice that their clothes are fitting more loosely around month 2, and the changes continue to develop for another month or so, although this depends on individual factors.
