How to Build Your Dermatologist-Approved Winter Skincare Routine

As the temperature begins to drop, your skin may also begin to change. Dry air and indoor heaters suck moisture from the skin and leave your face dry, red, and irritated. To combat your skin’s shifting needs, your skincare routine should change with the seasons, too.

Rejuvenating treatments like BOTOX® and dermal fillers help our Dallas patients fade imperfections, but nothing beats having a happy, healthy base for those treatments. To help you create or maintain that healthy foundation, here are a few tips to keep your skin glowing all winter long.

Find a gentle cleanser.

Foaming cleansers are great for giving you a satisfying, “squeaky clean” feel. However, they can be harsh on your skin and strip away essential moisture and oils. Cleansing balms are a gentler alternative, keeping your face clean but still hydrated. Look for hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products that are less likely to irritate your face.

Switch to a thicker moisturizer.

During the winter months, you want to keep your skin as moisturized as possible. This gives it extra protection against cold weather and brisk winds. Swap out your lighter, thinner summertime lotion for something thick and rich in texture. Creams help build up the skin barrier and physically block water from escaping.

Avoid over-exfoliating.

The dry winter air may leave your skin looking more dull and flaky than normal. A good exfoliator can reveal fresh skin cells and brighten your complexion—but don’t overdo this step. Over-exfoliation can disrupt the outer skin layer and leave your skin vulnerable to dryness and irritation. Try to exfoliate only once or twice a week, and consider a chemical exfoliant that may be gentler on your skin.

Try an overnight mask treatment.

Face masks aren’t only for relaxing “self-care” nights. They’re also a fun way to add a boost of hydration any day of the week. Overnight masks are usually made of rich, nourishing ingredients that are too heavy for your morning routine. They help lock in your serums and creams as you sleep and are the perfect finishing touch on a cozy winter evening.

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen.

You’ve heard it a thousand times before, but it’s still true: Wear sunscreen every day. Yes, even in winter. While you may not get a blistering sunburn in the middle of January, you can still sustain sun damage just as easily as during summer. Protect your skin from UVB rays by putting on sunscreen every morning. For the best results, reapply every few hours and touch up your makeup as necessary.
